
Our Work
It is the Police Authority' s responsibility to ensure that people who live, visit or work in Bedfordshire or Luton have an efficient, effective and ever-improving police service. The Authority has a strategic role and is not responsible for the day-to-day delivery of policing, which is the Chief Constable' s job.
The main responsibilities of the Police Authority are:
- Setting local policing priorities and targets for achievement
- Approving the police budget for the year, which includes agreeing the amount of council tax people pay towards policing
- Scrutinising financial expenditure throughout the year Monitoring police performance against the targets set by the Authority
- Publishing a variety of information to tell people what they can expect from their police service and report the achievements
- Monitoring the Complaints process
- To ensure that the force reflects, and meets the needs of, the diverse community it serves Consulting with the community to ensure that they have the opportunity to influence policing delivery
- To promote partnership with other organisations to address local crime and disorder issues
- Appointing the Chief Constable and other senior officers
- Managing the Independent Custody Scheme and Animal Welfare Scheme
