    Our Work
  • It is the Police Authority' s responsibility to ensure that people who live, visit or work in Bedfordshire or Luton have an efficient, effective and ever-improving police service. The Authority has a strategic role and is not responsible for the day-to-day delivery of policing, which is the Chief Constable' s job.

The main responsibilities of the Police Authority are:
    • Setting local policing priorities and targets for achievement
    • Approving the police budget for the year, which includes agreeing the amount of council tax people pay towards policing
    • Scrutinising financial expenditure throughout the year
    • Monitoring police performance against the targets set by the Authority
    • Publishing a variety of information to tell people what they can expect from their police service and report the achievements
    • Monitoring the Complaints process
    • To ensure that the Force reflects, and meets the needs of, the diverse community it serves
    • Consulting with the community to ensure that they have the opportunity to influence policing delivery
    • To promote partnership with other organisations to address local crime and disorder issues
    • Appointing the Chief Constable and other senior officers
    • Managing the Independent Custody Scheme and Animal Welfare Scheme
The Authority's committees are responsible for different areas of this workload while individual members take special responsibility a variety of performance related activities.

The Authority has introduced a new Committee structure from April 2011 to deliver its responsibilities. The agendas of our Committee meetings from 1st April 2007 - 31 March 2011 can be accessed through the Document Archive

By clicking on the committee links on this page you can access more detailed information about how the Police Authority operates and see the main areas of responsibility for each committee.
